VMware Virtualization Cuts Infrastructure Costs by 65% for Construction Group
The outcome

65% reduction in hardware maintenance costs — from £38,000 to £13,300 per year. We delivered this outcome for National Construction Group (220 users across 5 sites) by combining VMware, Windows Server, Server Backups into a single strategic engagement.

£55,000 in planned hardware replacement costs avoided through consolidation
Power and cooling costs reduced by 68% — saving £14,500 annually
Rack space reduced from 12 units to 4 — saving £6,200/year in co-location fees
Server provisioning time reduced from 3 weeks to 30 minutes via VM templates
01The Problem

What National Construction Group was facing

A national construction group with five regional offices was running 12 physical servers across their sites — many underutilised, aging, and increasingly expensive to maintain. Hardware maintenance contracts cost £38,000 per year, power and cooling bills were spiralling, and four servers were approaching end-of-warranty with replacement quotes exceeding £55,000. They needed a strategic partner to consolidate their infrastructure, reduce costs dramatically, and provide ongoing management — without disrupting their 24/7 project operations or site office connectivity. They also needed to maintain ISO 9001 certification throughout the consolidation.

02Our Consulting Approach

How we solved it

We conducted a comprehensive infrastructure assessment across all five sites, mapping server utilisation, workloads, and dependencies. We designed a VMware vSphere virtualization strategy that consolidated 12 physical servers onto 4 high-performance hosts — two at head office and one at each of the two largest regional offices — with vMotion enabled for zero-downtime maintenance and failover. We migrated all workloads over a phased 8-week rollout — evenings and weekends only — ensuring no site experienced operational disruption. We configured vCenter for centralised management, implemented Veeam backup for VM-level protection, and deployed 24/7 monitoring. Post-migration, we implemented ongoing maintenance contracts covering all hardware and quarterly health reviews.
